Technical Bibliography of the Comox Coalfield:

by Gwyneth Cathyl-Bickford, P.Geo., revised December 24, 2000

The Comox Coalfield, in its broadest sense, includes a number of outlying coal deposits, developed coal prospects and producing mines. As of December 2000, operating status is as follows:
Alberni Valley: coal deposit of limited extent, extensively drilled with minimal underground development. Includes Ash River, Lanterman Creek, Rogers Creek and Arrowsmith coal properties.
Anderson Lake: coal deposit, extensively drilled, but no underground development. Includes Dove Creek, Murex Creek, Mount Washington and Forbidden Plateau coal properties.
Campbell River: coal deposit, partially drilled but no underground development. Includes Quinsam East, Oyster River and Elk River Timber coal properties, and possible extension beneath drift-covered area on Quadra Island.
Comox Mines: past producer, from eight underground mines, extensively drilled with numerous test adits. Includes Anderson East, Browns River, Trent River and Allen Vale coal properties.
Denman/Hornby islands: exploration area with no significant coal discoveries to date, sparsely drilled but no underground development.
Hamilton Lake: coal deposit, extensively drilled with one test adit. Includes Idle Creek coal property.
Parksville/Qualicum: exploration area with no significant coal discoveries to date, partially drilled but no underground development. Includes Thames Creek, Kinkade Creek and Okay Mountain coal properties.
Quinsam Mines: current producer, from open-pit and underground mines, extensively drilled. Includes Chute Creek and Iron River coal properties.
Tsable River: past producer from an underground coal mine (Tsable River Colliery), extensively drilled and trenched, with several test adits; under consideration for development of new underground mine. Includes Castellmawr, Baynes Sound and Cowie Creek coal properties.
